I shot these images in the highlands of Guatemala in the mid-1990s. It's the dialogue between nature and humans. Today we know about the worldwide importance of this topic. I finished the film in 2021. This today issue is.

The scenes show rituals of the shamans in the highlands of Guatemala in the area of Laguna de Chicabal. In the Mayan vision, human beings and nature are in harmony, their spirits are intimately connected, their lives and well-being are interdependent. Both know about this dependence and step with each other in dialogue, protect each other and thus grant the common continuity.

The tribe of the Maya People respect this wisdom and live accordingly since centuries. Throughout the year they are in dialogue with the forces of nature. At the beginning of the rainy season, for example, the Shamans connect with the God of the Mist “Aj`Mayùl“  and ask for the rain to come soon, but gently, to fertilize the grains of the maize. As soon as the God of the Rains presents himself (in form of a white, nebulous ghost) and when after that the rain sets in, all the people, carrying large baskets filled with flowers and other sacrificial gifts, make a pilgrimage to the lake Chicabal high up, between the volcanoes, to thank “Aj`Mayul“  and to give him a warm welcome. It is an act of a peaceful amalgamation.

Diese Aufnahmen habe ich Mitte der 1990-er Jahren im Hochland von Guatemala gedreht. Sie handeln vom Dialog zwischen Mensch und Natur. Heute wissen wir von der Bedeutung dieses Themas. Ich habe den Film erst 2021 fertiggestellt, er erscheint mir nun dringend.

Die Szenen zeigen Rituale der Schamanen in der Hochebene Guatemalas im Gebiet der Laguna de Chicabal. In der Vision der Mayas sind Mensch und Natur auf derselben Augenhöhe, ihr Geist ist eng miteinander verbunden, ihr Leben und Wohlbefinden hängen voneinander ab. Beide Seiten wissen von dieser Abhängigkeit und treten miteinander in Dialog, schützen einander und gewähren so den gemeinsamen Fortbestand.

Zu Beginn der Regenzeit rufen die Schamanen den Nebelgott „Aj`Mayùl“ an, damit er bald komme und Regenwolken bringe. Bitten und Flehen lösen sich ab mit Verzweiflung und Demut. Der Nebelgott zeigt sich zuerst in Form eines leichten flockigen Nebels, der gleich wieder verschwindet, um später als sichtbar enthusiastischer Geist quer über den See zu fegen. Dann setzt der Regen ein. Und mit ihm kommen die Menschen über die Hügel, mit Körben voller Opfergaben. In berührender Dankbarkeit und Hingabe sprechen sie den Regen an und heißen ihn willkommen, ein Akt der Verbindung.
